Notes from the President’s Desk

November 10th is the Marine Corps birthday, 249 years since the Continental Congress acted to raise two battalions of landing troops for the just created Continental Navy. Happy birthday to the Marines past and present!

On November 11, 1919, King George V of Great Britain led the first Armistice Day observance with two-minutes of silence in remembrance of those who died in World War I; one year after fighting ended at 11:11 on Nov. 11, 1918. The U.S. officially began observing Armistice Day in 1921, but in 1954 President Eisenhower redesignated Nov. 11th as Veteran's Day to pay tribute to the service and sacrifices of all American veterans – living and dead.
Our joint Miramar & SD chapter luncheon at Admiral Baker on Oct 3rd was well attended, with an excellent lunch and a great presentation by retired Captain Dr. Mark Brouker about his research on the leadership of Admiral Chester Nimitz and the book he is writing about him. We also got to present MOAA’s 5-star & 4-star Communications awards to Bernie Marstall for his continued outstanding work as our webmaster and producing our fantastic newsletter!

We are starting the nomination process to select our Board of Directors for 2025-2026. I will step down at the end of December, after 7 years in this role, and several other of our board positions are turning over as well. This year, we need to fill our President, 1st VP (Program Chair), 3rd VP (Membership Chair), Treasurer, Surviving Spouse Liaison, Newsletter Editor and Webmaster, Navy Service Representative and Army Service Representative positions, so please get busy nominating yourself for one of these important roles! (See Insert in the November Newsletter posted on this Website).

We’ll hold our annual Holiday Luncheon and Toys for Tots toy drive at Admiral Baker Golf Course on Thursday, Dec 5th at 1130. Please join us to mark the holiday season, enjoy good fellowship and reflect on our many blessings.
